Sometimes, tooth extraction may be a necessary step to improve your oral health. Not to worry, though, we offer several solutions that replace missing teeth!
Reasons You May Need a Tooth Extraction
There are a few reasons you may need a tooth extraction. We will always attempt to save a broken or damaged tooth with a dental crown before we suggest extraction. However, there are instances where the damage or decay is too severe for repairs. In this case, your tooth will need extraction. Teeth that are extremely loose due to periodontal (gum) disease or trauma may also require extraction, particularly if a bone graft is unsuccessful or impossible.
Other reasons for extraction include:
• |
Extra teeth that prevent others from erupting properly
|
• |
Primary (baby) teeth that do not fall out at the appropriate time
|
• |
Radiation treatment or cancer medications that cause an infection in the tooth
|
• |
Orthodontic treatment that requires additional room in the jaw so that teeth can be moved to their proper position
|
• |
Preventing the spread of infection due to periodontal disease
|
• |
The removal of third molars, commonly referred to as wisdom teeth, that lead to impacted teeth, severe pain, cysts or infection, and crowding issues |
Simple Extractions
There are two types of extractions: simple and surgical. A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that has already erupted above the gum tissue. Before your simple extraction, we will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area and eliminate any pain or discomfort. Next, Dr. Bijan Modjtahedi will loosen the tooth from its socket and connective ligaments using an instrument known as an elevator. Once the tooth is loose enough, we will use a pair of forceps to remove the tooth from its socket.
After a simple extraction, a blood clot should form within the socket. The clot is a crucial part of the healing process. We usually pack the area with gauze to help reduce the bleeding. In some cases, we may also use a couple of stitches. If the blood clot breaks or loosens, it could lead to a painful condition called dry socket. If this happens, be sure to contact us as soon as possible.
Surgical Extractions
A surgical extraction is a little more complex, typically reserved for teeth that have yet to erupt, or broken off at the gumline. During your surgical extraction, we will make a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the tooth. Again, we will use local anesthetic beforehand to eliminate pain. We may also recommend some form of sedation to provide a more relaxing and comfortable experience. Once the tooth is exposed, we will remove it from the socket. We may need to break the tooth into several pieces if it is particularly hard to remove. We may also need to cut away some of the surrounding bone to extract it.
What is a Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extraction includes removing wisdom teeth but also includes tooth removal for several other reasons. If your teeth are decaying from disease or trauma or simply crowding your mouth, you may find yourself thinking that some teeth need to be removed. If you think that some of your teeth need to be extracted, our team at Bijan Family Dental Practice can help.
Adults and children can need teeth removed. When children need teeth removed it is expected that the adult teeth will grow to replace the extracted teeth. Adult permanent teeth should last a lifetime but there are reasons that they may need to be removed.
When is a Tooth Extraction Needed?
Teeth may need to be removed for several reasons, including damaged teeth or overcrowding. Damaged teeth can occur from an injury or infection.
When a tooth is damaged, our team may recommend that it be removed. A decaying tooth can lead to more infections with other teeth or gums. If decay in the tooth gets to the center of the tooth or the pulp, it can cause further damage. Root canals can also help treat decaying teeth but extraction can be an option if that does not work.
If your immune system is compromised, our team may recommend removing teeth. Chemotherapy and other compromises to your immune system can cause teeth infections. If the risk is high enough, our team may extract teeth.
Gum disease can also lead to teeth being extracted. If gum disease has caused the tissue and bones that support the teeth to weaken, our professionals may deem it necessary to extract teeth.
Teeth can also be extracted because of overcrowding in the mouth. This is typical to prepare for orthodontic work. If your teeth are too big to be properly aligned, then our team may extract some teeth to ensure that your teeth can be aligned. Teeth can also be removed if they cannot break through the gums because there is not enough room to grow.
What is the Tooth Extraction Process?
A tooth extraction procedure involves the removal of a tooth from its sockets. It helps prevent the spread of bacteria and can sometimes be very necessary if there is no other way to fix the tooth. One of the most common reasons people opt for tooth extraction is to eliminate deep decay. Tooth decay can create severe toothache, which is always very painful. The dentist will consider removing the tooth to stop the pain so that you can comfortably eat your food and drink hot and cold beverages.
Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure for both kids and adults. Although it involves some minor pain, local anesthesia is always administered to make the extraction procedure painless.
There is nothing much to expect during the tooth extraction procedure, and therefore, no preparation is needed. You only need to ensure you are calm and ready to have your tooth extracted. Our dentist will provide you with other important tips about tooth extraction and what to do after the treatment.
There are two types of teeth extraction procedures: simple extraction and surgical extraction. Both are usually performed to eliminate tooth decay or prevent bacterial infection spread. However, there is a common difference between the two. Simple tooth extraction is mainly done if your tooth is above the gum line. The dentist will use forceps to pull the tooth out. But if your gums or bone tissues need to be removed, you will need a surgical tooth extraction procedure. In both cases, the dentist must use anesthetic to numb your nerves to ensure you do not feel any pain during the procedure.
Is a Tooth Extraction Painful?
Since you are given anesthetic, it is only after the tooth removal process that some pain occurs, but it will soon disappear with proper care. After the procedure, the dentist will guide you on how to take care of the extraction to ease the pain.
But even before you think of the procedure, it is important to know when you need an extraction and why it is necessary. Here at our dental clinic Bijan Family Dental Practice, we are dedicated to ensuring you maintain your dental health. We will help you understand the health of your teeth, and if there are any procedures you will need to improve your oral health.
How Long is the Recovery from a Tooth Extraction?
Recovery after a simple tooth extraction typically takes about one to two weeks. During this time, the gum tissue heals, and any swelling or discomfort should gradually subside. Most people can return to normal activities within a day or two, but it is important to follow post-extraction care instructions to ensure proper healing.
What Are the Risks of a Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extraction, while generally safe, carries several risks. These include infection, dry socket (where the blood clot dislodges from the extraction site), damage to surrounding teeth or nerves, prolonged bleeding, and delayed healing. Additionally, patients may experience swelling, pain, and bruising. Following post-operative care instructions can help minimize these risks and promote proper healing.
The risks of not having your affected teeth extracted is actually the greatest risk. If you have loose teeth that are causing periodontal disease, the dentist will extract the teeth to prevent the disease from spreading and causing pain around your gums. Teeth overcrowding is another problem that usually affects kids when their permanent teeth erupt. In this case, your child's pediatric dentist will extract the teeth that are not supposed to be there to create room for the new teeth. Lastly, fractured teeth are also considered dangerous as they can host bacteria that can potentially cause oral problems. This is why they are always extracted before they create cavities and infections.
