Woman smiling after dental exam and cleaning at Bijan Family Dental Practice in Fountain Valley, CA 92708-5647Maintaining a healthy mouth requires good oral hygiene. There are several components involved with an oral hygiene routine. A significant amount of your routine takes place at home with daily brushing and flossing. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you brush twice a day and floss at least once a day. In addition to your home oral care, the ADA also recommends two dental exams and cleanings each year. Bijan Family Dental Practice can help.

Dental Exams

Regular dental exams are important for spotting signs of oral health issues in their earliest stages before symptoms begin to appear. By finding issues in their early stages, we can provide treatments to restore the health of your mouth and prevent more serious complications from occurring. During your dental exams, we look over your teeth, checking for cracks, chips, decay, and cavities. We look over your gums for signs of gum disease, including redness, inflammation, periodontal pockets, and gum recession. We also perform an oral cancer screening. During this screening, we look over the soft tissues in your mouth, checking for unusual changes and other abnormalities.

After we have examined your mouth, we will take the time to discuss the results with you. We will discuss lifestyle habits, such as smoking and alcohol use, and your oral care habits at home. If you have any questions or concerns, we can also take the time to go over those as well. Dental X-rays are also an important part of your dental exams. While not taken at every exam, they provide us with a unique view of your mouth. These images show us the hidden areas of your mouth, enabling us to spot cavities between your teeth as well as issues with the roots of your teeth and your jawbone. With a complete picture of your oral health, we can continue to provide you with optimal care.

Dental Cleanings

While brushing and flossing are important for removing plaque and bacteria from your teeth, there are some areas of your mouth that may be harder to clean than others. This can lead to buildup and the formation of tartar, or calcified plaque, which cannot be removed by brushing. Buildup quickly increases your risk for tooth decay and gum disease. With regular cleanings, we can remove even the most stubborn buildup from every area of your teeth, including those areas that you may not be able to reach.

After scrubbing the teeth, we move on to polishing. Polishing is accomplished with an electric handpiece outfitted with a rotating head and a special dental polish. This polish contains abrasives that work to scrub the surfaces of your teeth. Polishing helps to remove surface stains and other debris, giving you a clean, fresh smile. Finally, we floss your teeth. This is done to remove all buildup from between your teeth, including the loose debris and any dental polish that may have collected during the course of your cleaning.

Regular dental exams and cleanings, in conjunction with brushing and flossing at home, can help to maintain the health of your mouth and prevent a wide array of serious issues. For more information, or to schedule your appointment, call Bijan Family Dental Practice today at (714) 421-4494.
